VCSE Group and Organisation Support Services
South Derbyshire Volunteer Force offers support and guidance in recruiting, managing, and supporting volunteers. Through sector forums, training sessions, and the sharing of best practices, we assist volunteer managers and those responsible for leading volunteers in building effective and engaged teams.
South Derbyshire Volunteer Force can help your group or organisation to recruit volunteers. We promote local volunteering opportunities through our established networks, website, and social media.

To make the process of onboarding volunteers we offer two options, for engagement, these are:

OPTION 1 – Applicant Vetting and Referral*
Our website, networks, and social media will promote your opportunity. We will register expressions of interest and then take the applicant through a vetting process which includes, collecting and validating their data, collecting health information, verifying their identity (through ID checks and collecting two positive references. Once the applicant has been through this vetting process they will be asked to complete some induction training at which point we refer them to you for orientation and onboarding with your organisation.

OPTION 2 – Direct Referrals
Our website, networks, and social media will promote your opportunity. We will register expressions of interest and refer these directly to a nominated point of contact within your organisation. All we then ask to ensure we can maintain our record of destinations and success is that you feedback on the status of the applicant and whether they were successful in being appointed within 3 months of referral.
* When registering an opportunity with us the default engagement with be Option 1, if you wish to opt out of this please indicate on your registration form.

As a VCSE organisation we are keen to remove the barriers to engaging with young people, as we have seen an increasing demand for youth volunteering opportunities from young people aged 14 years or older.
Engaging with youth volunteers is such a grey area, with very limited definitive guidance available.
However, we have compiled a list of points for consideration and reflection when considering engaging youth volunteers.
-
The most important starting point is to check your employer’s liability insurance to ensure it covers u18 volunteers, particularly if you are looking at engaging u16.
-
For youth volunteers u16 it is imperative, and for u18 it is beneficial, to seek parental consent for engagement – whereby you outline the tasks and the associated risks for their due consideration and approval. This serves to mitigate several risks.
-
Ensure a safeguarding risk assessment is completed for u18s.
-
Review and if necessary, amend your safeguarding practice, policy, and disclosure and reporting procedures to ensure they are appropriate for both adults and u18s. The NSPCC has a self-assessment tool that could support this activity available HERE.
-
Review and amend your future volunteer recruitment process in line with Safer Recruitment guidelines, for example, collecting and verifying references for adult volunteers – asking referees to confirm the volunteer’s ability to work with young people and or children. Ensuring the references remain consistent with any application and or interview information collected.
-
Consider instating risk controls. This could include:
-
ensuring 2 adult volunteers or more are assigned to work with any young person, with strictly no lone working with a young person.
-
consider providing Safeguarding Essentials training to all volunteers; to raise awareness of risks and to ensure they are aware of disclosure and reporting procedures.
-
implement a code of conduct for both adults and u18.
